In the first year of the course you will study around 200 herbs and the formulas that they go into. You will focus on each individual herb, and experience it first hand in the pharmacy - the taste, colour, texture, name, action and application. You will then learn several formulas each week until, at the end of year one, you will have learnt all the commonly used, classical formulae (around 100 of them): these are the ones which are made up into tablets as “patent” herbal medicine. At this point, you will receive a Certificate in Patent Herbal Medicine.
Then in the second year, which is entirely clinical, you will learn how to modify these formulas adjusting the classical standard to fit your individual patients. You will have the chance to make up your patient’s modified formula in the herbal dispensary, cementing your knowledge even further.
In addition to your classes at LCTA you will attend a weekend course in Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy in association with the Chinese Medicine Herb Garden in Bristol and a day at Kew Gardens.
