Each year we run a two-week, certificated study trip to Hangzhou, a large but very beautiful city in China. Led by Andy Kemp, this trip gives Chinese medicine students and graduates the chance to work in a large, urban Chinese TCM hospital. It is an excellent opportunity to see Chinese medicine used in modern-day China.
Please note places are limited to make sure everyone enjoys a great trip.
The Course
You will have 10 days clinical training at the Hangzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine working with a Doctor in the outpatients department in either acupuncture, herbs or tui na. You will also have the opportunity to observe in-patients on ward rounds. Translators are provided where necessary.
This is a unique opportunity to improve clinical skills and observe TCM being used on the ‘front line’ within the hustle and bustle of a busy hospital (annually there are 8,000 outpatients, 10,000 inpatients).
There will be two lecture afternoons during the fortnight, given by very experienced Doctors who are specialists in their field. Topics can be negotiated by the group!
Social Events
Famous for the West Lake, surrounding hills and temples Hangzhou is a wonderful place to explore. The Hospital will organise a sightseeing tour at the weekend to places such as the museum of TCM and Taoist temple. There will also be trips organised to the night market, the silk market and Lingyin Temple (one of the most famous temples in China).
There will, however, still be plenty of time to explore on your own though if you wish and, if you are a reasonable cyclist, Andy can organise free cycle hire.
With the extended weekend at the end of the trip it is possible to visit a variety of places in China. In the past, students have visited Shanghai, Beijing, Xian and various other destinations. It is also a good time to just relax and enjoy Hangzhou if you wish. At the end of the course there will be a closing ceremony and banquet.
